MARKETING & PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERN

The University of Georgia’s Office of Global Engagement serves as a resource for students interested in studying, working, volunteering, teaching or interning abroad. The office hosts events to aid students in determining if they want to consider participating in a study abroad or domestic field study program.

SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN

While working for the Office of Global Engagement, I was tasked to create a social media campaign for the UGA Study Abroad platforms. I discovered that their pages each lacked consistency as they posted infrequently, and their content did not seem united as a whole. Even though they have a large target audience, they lacked engagement and diversity in the content they were posting.

The Instagram and Twitter pages each had a following of approximately 1K, but they were following many accounts outside of their target audience – current and prospective UGA students. After evaluating their current strategy, I came up with a plan to revamp and create new content that would spark up engagement on the posts and grow their number of active followers.

I took the initiative to implement specific post types such as Student Spotlights, Travel Tip Tuesdays, and Photo Contests. By featuring more students on their platforms, the pages each gained a higher reach, as more students began to tag @ugastudyabroad in their posts. I also began to tag relevant UGA-affiliated accounts and hashtags when needed. For example, if a student participated in a business school study away program, I made sure to tag UGA’s business school, Terry College, in the post as well as their specific study abroad hashtag #terrytravelers. In becoming more personable and showing off more students, more followers were able to interact more on the platforms, and the follower number increased to over 2K on Instagram and Twitter in a span of three months.

OPEN HOUSE EVENT

The office hosts an annual open house for students interested in any of UGA’s study away programs. The event allows students to speak with Advisors and Student Ambassadors one on one at the Global Education building in a low pressure setting. For this event, I drafted public relations documents such as Media Lists for companies and businesses interested in sponsoring the event. My other roles included marketing, set-up, and editing websites, newsletters, and brochures.
